IN MEMORIAM
Калі ў сьнежні 2002 году Зора й Вітаўт Кіпелі перадалі мне для падрыхтоўкі да друку аўтарскі варыянт кнігі, ніхто ня мог прадбачыць, што для аднаго з суаўтараў гэтага выданьня яно акажацца пасьмяротным.
Ужо праз тыдзень пасьля сьмерці спн. Зоры др. Вітаўт у тэ- лефоннай размове са мною сказаў, узгадваючы той чорны дзень: «Зьміцер, я адправіў табе карэктуру а періпай гадзіпе дня, а ўжо а чацьвертай трыццаць Зора адышла - нібы ведала, што ўсё нармальна, можна быць спакойнаю, - справа робіцца».
Складаньне бібліяграфіі пачалося больш за поўстагодзьдзя таму ў выніку запачаткаваньня збору беларускіх друкаў на Захадзе. Таму кнігу гэтую можна назваць працаю жыцьця ей- ных складальнікаў. На жаль, лёс не дазволіў спн. Зоры дача- кацца выхаду кнігі, якая, разам зь дзясяткамі Ейных іншых публікацыяў, застанецца помнікам Ёй — узордм ВЫСОКАГА СЛУЖЭНЬНЯ ВЕЛАРусі. Застануцца таксама шчырыя ўспаміны мноства людзей, што ведалі Яе асабіста, і тых, хто быў знаёмы зь Ёю толькі па друку ці зь ліставаньня. Зорын вялізарны навуко- вы й духовы набытак будзе з часам асэнсаваны й ацэнены ды станецца вартаснаю часткаю скарбніцы нацыяналыіае культуры.

The century past has been notable for the emigration of hun­dreds of thousands of intellectuals from the lands of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Many of those intellec­tuals who emigrated were justifiably angry at the regimes that had repressed and often murdered their relatives. They were anxious both to excoriate these tyrannies and document the res gestae of their compatriots in regions distant from the homelands, including West­ern Europe, the Americas, and even Australia. The first bibliogra­phical guides to the literature of the Slavic, Baltic, East European and Eurasian emigrations were published immediately after World War I. Their publication continued with unabated intensity through the interwar period, during the Second World War and its after­math, and, especially, since the implosion of the Soviet Union. In recent years the bibliography of the Slavic, East European and Eura­sian emigrations has become a cottage industry and literally dozens of bibliographical guides have appeared documenting the publish­ing histories of dozens of these groups outside their homelands.
In this respect the achievements of the Kipels—Zora and Vi- taut—and of their remarkable family and colleagues—fall into a
pattern that is recognizable to colleagues concerned with Slavic and East European book culture. Their work reminds us of the impor­tant contributions to the emigre book culture of Ukrainians by Ivan Luckiw, Lyubomyr Wynar, Bohdan Krawciw and Bohdan Yasinsky; of Carpatho-Rusyn culture by Paul R. Magocsi; of Russian by Mik­hail Schatoff; of Polish by Jan Kowalik; of Czech and Slovak by Voj- tech Duben; of Bulgarian by George 1. Paprikoff; of Lithuanian by A. Kantautas; and of Latvian by Benjamins Jegers1. There are, how­

ever, nuances that deserve mention. Zora and Vitaut are special people. They have devoted a lifetime to the collection, preservation and proseletization of resources relating to Belarusian culture in the broadest sense of this term. Since their student days in Belgium, they have actively participated in the lives of the Belarusian dias­pora and have devoted time and treasure to the preservation of their understanding of the Belarusian cultural patrimony. While one can argue about certain specifics of their expansive worldview, few could dispute their devotion and stoic dedication to the preservation of the culture of their generation and their forebears.
The catalog and bibliographical guide to Belarusian emigre and other publications is proof of their zeal and devotion. The bibliogra­phical guide contains upwards of 5,000 titles, the majority of which (90%) are now accessible to readers in the Slavic and Baltic Division of The New York Public Library. The collection has been housed in 168 archival boxes under the Belarusian classmark of *QM 99-5211 and 5212. Those items in the collections of the NYPL are indicated in the catalog with an asterisk. These books, serials, ephemera and gra­phics donated in 1999 add to a historical collection which now takes on the nature of a national and international resource for the study of Belarusian culture, both on its historical territories and abroad. It is fitting and appropriate that the NYPL includes this publication as the fourth volume in its ongoing Russian, East European and Eura­sian Resource Series, published and distributed on behalf of the Lib­rary by Norman Ross Publishing.
The Kipels have gone against the current by donating their emi­gre Belarusica to an American library, not to one in Belarus. (In the last decade, other collectors of emigre Slavica and Baltica have often donated their libraries to collections in the homelands). In addition,
